I just had one of the greatest shocks of my life. I was sitting at work enjoying just sitting there. Sometimes I like that, other times it causes me to not like it and wish to not be sitting. But in this case, the boss' interruption to preview a document for him was not exactly welcomed.
But I didn't tell him that. Instead, I replied "sure" and began reading. It was a well crafted document, especially if he ever reads this blog. I began noticing that his spacing was odd. I selected a period and the letter after it AND... there was only 1 space!! :o I checked a few more and they were all one space. Oh the agony!! I quickly informed him of this blatant typographical error, happy to have made a difference. BUT!! I was informed that one space is the correct way. /eyes pop A quick google search later and I was humbled. The world has tipped upside down. Those Junior High typing classes have failed me. HTML has turned the tables with it's ability to display proportional fonts and truncating double spaces. And what's even more embarassing is that I currently have a job developping web software.where the one space formatting came from and had no clue. AND, if you haven't noticed, my fingers are still typing two spaces after a period. <--- see. It's just a reflex. There will be great anguish before this is over and I'm allowed to join the ranks of the One Space Empire.

It's a very common mistake. The two space rule is still correct for typewriters, by the way. It's that that computers aren't typewriters, they are typesetters. The two space rule has always been wrong for typesetters, going all the way back to the Gutenburg era. |
